SpongeBob Squarepants is one name that pops up in a jiffy when animation lovers across, think of their favorite cartoon.
The reasons for this are numerous, the biggest one being the endearing characters, each one of which has gone on to become a household name.
While the show was mostly about fun, frolic and vibrancy, there were some episodes that added a tinge of gravity to the show, making us contemplate on issues that did not seem significant at first sight.
One such episode that still remains etched in our minds is probably, the most talked-about episode, ‘Rock-A-Bye Bivalve’.
This season 3 episode broke all conventions, as it blatantly brought to light, the contentious subject of SpongeBob’s sexuality. The plot followed the story of SpongeBob and Patrick, as they jointly decide to adopt a deserted baby scallop. The two embarked on this mission like any monogamous couple, sharing responsibility, and exuding sizzling chemistry.
This led to rumors about SpongeBob being homosexual and, urged the viewers to pay heed to previous incidents, where SpongeBob displayed some ‘gayish’ traits.
This included episodes that featured the adorable character of SpongeBob in female attire, sporting cosmetics! Adding fuel to the fire, he and Patrick were also seen sharing several moments of intimacy on the show, which explains the sudden surge in SpongeBob’s popularity among the gay community.
However Show’s creator, Stephen Hilenburg, has put all the controversies to rest, by saying that neither was SpongeBob homosexual, nor was he heterosexual, but he was indeed asexual.
Quite an interesting conclusion to the entire hullabalo!
